How TikTok Inspired My Y2K Style Portrait Generator

Published
2 min read

Sometimes ideas don’t come from coding bootcamps, technical books, or hackathons.
Sometimes they just appear while scrolling TikTok.

That’s how my latest project, Y2K Style, came to life.

The Spark ✨

One evening, I was casually swiping through TikTok when I noticed a trend: portraits glowing in Y2K aesthetics.

  • Metallic textures

  • Holographic colors

  • Cyberpunk vibes

  • That dreamy late-90s / early-2000s atmosphere

It felt like I was looking at magazine covers from the year 2000 — futuristic yet nostalgic.

The nostalgia hit me hard, but so did the frustration:
Why is it so hard to recreate this look myself?

Most tutorials were too complex, full of Photoshop layers and adjustments. The results often felt fake, missing that authentic Y2K vibe.

The “What If” 💡

That’s when I asked myself:

What if there was a way to generate this effect with one click?

Instead of saving another video to my favorites, I decided to turn that “what if” into a project.

Building Y2K Style 🚀

Fast forward a few weeks, and I launched Y2K Style — a website where anyone can upload a photo and instantly transform it into a Y2K-style portrait.

  • No tutorials

  • No complex filters

  • Just one click

Your ordinary selfie turns into something that looks like an early-2000s album cover in under a minute.

Why I’m Sharing This 🌍

This wasn’t a startup plan. It wasn’t about “the next big thing.”
It was just me following curiosity.

And that’s what I love about small side projects:

  1. They remind us that building can be playful.

  2. They let us explore culture and technology at the same time.

  3. They sometimes bring joy to people in unexpected ways.

Try It Yourself 🎨

Final Thought 💭

Not every project needs to start with a business plan. Sometimes the best ones begin with a late-night scroll, a spark of inspiration, and the courage to build something fun.

Thanks for reading — and if you’ve ever built a project inspired by a random TikTok trend, I’d love to hear your story!
